Carey Stewart

Assistant Director for Intercultural Learning

Carey Stewart is the Assistant Director for Intercultural Learning for Cranwell International Center and serves as Program Director for Mozaiko Living-Learning Community at Virginia Tech. Carey is currently writing her dissertation for her Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction at Virginia Tech, focusing on using literature to promote intercultural learning. Carey received her Master of Arts in Educational Leadership and Supervision from Virginia Commonwealth University, a Master of Arts in Educational Psychology from Virginia Tech, and a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education with a concentration in social studies. Carey holds graduate certificates in cognition and education and in future professoriate from Virginia Tech and gifted education from the University of Virginia.

Carey is a Virginia Tech Diversity Scholar Award recipient due to her scholarly contributions to education focused on equity and access to diverse children's literature. Additionally, Carey was an international global perspectives fellowship scholar. She traveled to France, Italy, and Switzerland to study international higher education and conduct research at nine institutions of higher education. Her research during the fellowship focused on instruction and assessment practices in international higher education. Carey also received the Alexis Taylor Breaux International Fellowship Award for research on global perspectives and international higher education.

Carey has a wealth of experience presenting at international and national conferences and has published journal articles, book chapters, book reviews, and expert opinion commentaries. She has served as a classroom teacher, collaborative co-teacher, instructional resource teacher, instructional coach, and school administrator. In addition to her work in public and private schools, Carey has served as an Instructor of Record and University Supervisor mentoring preservice teachers for the School of Education at Virginia Tech.

Carey's passion is advocating for all students' right to an equitable education, with a particular emphasis on first-generation and international students. Her research interests include utilizing diverse children's literature to promote intercultural learning, multicultural education, social equality, preservice and in-service teacher coaching and professional development, and sacrificial listening.
