On-Campus Employment

All F-1 or J-1 students are permitted to work on-campus.

During the Fall and Spring semester, and during other terms where a student is enrolled full-time, students are limited to 20 hours or less of work per week. Violation of this restriction could mean termination of your status, so please be sure to stay aware of hours worked. A work week starts each Saturday at 12:01 a.m. and ends on the following Friday at 11:59 p.m. While classes are not in session and students are on an official break, students are eligible to work over 20 hours per week.

  • F-1 students are not required to report their on-campus employment.
  • J-1 students must report their on-campus employment each semester to their international student advisor or their program sponsor.

Note: If you have currently have an I-20 with one of the following Form Issue Reasons: change of level, transfer pending, or change of status, you will need to complete your Immigration Check In e-form on the Intl Hokies Portal before beginning your on-campus work. Upon approval of your Immigration Check In, you will be provided with a continued attendance I-20 that you will need to submit to the VT Payroll Office in order to begin your on-campus employment.
