Spring 2024 Schedule
All sessions will be offered simultaneously in person and as online Zoom webinars (links below). Register for the sessions you plan to attend. Seating and refreshments are limited for the in-person option, first-come, first-seated.
Monday, February 26
3-4 p.m. - Introduction to F-1 Employment Options
This is a hybrid event. An introduction to different types of on and off-campus F-1 introduction. Learn about on-campus employment, Curricular Practical Training (CPT), Optional Practical Training (OPT) and STEM OPT work authorization.

4-5 p.m. - Job Searching in the U.S.
This is a hybrid event. Learn the best practices and common paths to finding a job in the U.S. after graduation from Career and Professional Development! A career advisor will answer any questions you have regarding the U.S. job search process and will share resources available to you on an off campus.

4-6 p.m. - IRIS Session
Need a professional photo? The Office of Career and Professional Development is offering an open photo session in the Smith Career Center. Come in your best professional dress and get a professional photo taken for your portfolio and job search! Please register and you can come anytime between 4-6 p.m.

Tuesday, February 27
3:30-4:30 p.m. - CPT Workshop
This is a hybrid event. A basic overview of the Curricular Practical Training (CPT) work authorization, which includes tips on when and how to apply. CPT is used to legally accept and undertake an internship or work experience during your studies.

4:30-5:30 p.m. - Introduction to OPT and the Self-Enroll Course
This is a hybrid event. An overview of the Optional Practical Training (OPT) work authorization rules and the application process. This session will also go over the basics of the online, self-guided course available on Canvas.

5:30-6:30 p.m. - Introduction to STEM OPT
This is a hybrid event. Are you graduating with Homeland Security designated STEM degree? Come learn all about the twenty-four-month extension allotted to STEM students, including when and how to apply and what kind of employment you need.

Wednesday, February 28
3:30-4:30 p.m. - Interviewing in the U.S.
This is a hybrid event. Join Career and Professional Development to learn about how to prepare for an interview, what to expect during a U.S. interview process, the differences between phone vs. virtual vs. in-person, and much more.

4:30-5:30p.m. - Immigration Options in Academia
This is a hybrid event. Learn about the different immigration statuses sponsored by U.S. universities, including the J-1, H1B, and Permanent Residence. This session is particularly helpful if you’re looking to work at U.S. universities in teaching, research, or administrative roles.

5:30p.m. - H-1B (Work Visa) and Permanent Residency (Green Card) Options Workshop
This is a hybrid event. During this workshop presented by immigration attorneys, you will get the chance to learn more about the H-1B work visa and employment-based permanent residency options. It is important to note that Cranwell International Center is not able to advise students regarding the H-1B work visa or permanent residency - you should always seek the guidance of an experienced immigration attorney.

Thursday, February 29 (Leap Year)
3-4 p.m. - CPT Ask-Me-Anything Session
This is a hybrid event. In this ask-me-anything session, you will get to meet and ask any questions you have about CPT, the path to working legally in an internship or concurrent, curricular opportunity off-campus, with an international student adviser.

4 p.m. - Career Pathways Discussion with Recent Alumni
Conversation with VT international student alumni on their career experiences. Online only.
Friday, March 1
4-5 p.m. - OPT Ask-Me-Anything Session
This is a hybrid event. In this ask-me-anything session, you can ask any questions you have about OPT with an international student advisor and learn more about the Optional Practical Training (OPT) work authorization rules and application process.
