Helena Carvalho, Ph.D.
Associate Professor and Block Director at Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine (VTCSOM). PhD in Physiology at University State of Rio de Janeiro and Post-doc at Virginia Commonwealth University in Virginia. Reviewer for Advances in Physiology Education and IAMSE Medical Educator. Member of the Editorial board of the Brazilian Journal of Health and Biomedical Sciences. Co-author of the book Proposal for a Contemporary Medical Graduation. She is an educator with more than 20 years of experience with several publications and presentations at national and international meetings. The goal of her work is to promote long-term learning focusing her research on the development of Innovative Teaching Methodology (e.g. manipulative and dramatization) and research faculty conceptions of learning and teaching. Engaged with education to all levels, she teaches Human Physiology to medical students and volunteers to teach Science to middle and high school students. Member of the VTCSOM Inclusive Task Force working to improve diversity, equity and inclusion, including equal opportunities for women.
